Brookline has been home to many notable individuals - from Frederick Law Olmsted to JFK to Theo Epstein. Although surrounded by the city of Boston, it is not a neighborhood of the city – a fact Brookline is quite proud of. Being an independent town, Brookline maintains its own separate institutions (libraries, schools, etc). Many enclaves give it a distinct flavor: Coolidge Corner, the funky shopping district; Longwood, the leafy area near to the medical center; Brookline Village, the heart of the town and Chestnut Hill, the patrician borough of stately homes and home of Boston College. Also bordering on Boston University, Boston College, Harvard Medical School and the New England Institute of Art, Brookline is home to a multitude of students.

There is a lot to do in Brookline, go check out a Sci-Fi movie marathon at the Coolidge Corner Moviehouse, shop at a trendy boutique or choose from one of the many kosher restaurants in the area like Rami's or Rubin's.

First settled in the 1600s by European colonists, Brookline was not officially named until 1705. Back in the 1870s when all the neighboring towns had referendums about whether or not to join the City of Boston, Brookline was the only one that said no. Therefore, since 1705, Brookline has been partaking in town meetings and staying apart from Boston politics. Brookline has many neighbors, including Newton, Jamaica Plain and Brighton.
