Brookline Village
The Brookline Village Historic District developed as a result of the shift of the town center from Brookline’s Town Green area to a rural area once called Punch Bowl Village. This happened when the residents opted to build their second town hall in 1845 in an area closer to the railroad and new turnpike. When this happened local government was transferred to the village. A wave of commercial construction followed. Wood frame buildings were replaced with panel brick commercial structures that are still at the heart of the village today. Building continued until about 1905, the 200th anniversary of the town. Brookline Village today still looks very much as it did then. Its commercial area features late 19th century buildings in active use.
